Tibet, on the lofty Tibetan Plateau on the northern side of the Himalayas, is an autonomous region of China. It’s nicknamed the “Roof of the World” for its towering peaks. It shares Mt. Everest with Nepal. Its capital, Lhasa, is site of hilltop Potala Palace, once the Dalai Lama’s winter home, and Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s spiritual heart, revered for its golden statue of the young Buddha. Lhasa is the capital city and center of administration for the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, and lies in the south-central area of the Tibetan plateau. At an altitude of 3,656 meters above sea level, it is the world’s highest capital city, and the center of the Tibetan culture and religion.

Potala Palace is composed of the White Palace and the Red Palace. Tour the 13-story fort complex, which sits at 12,140 feet (3,700 meters) and overlooks the Lhasa Valley. The 1,000 rooms within the Palace hold thousands of historical and religious documents, including rare painted scrolls, sculptures, colorful murals and other fine objects.
